For dental implants to be safely placed, the jawbone must be of sufficient size and volume, which is frequently not the case in the upper jaw. In patients with insufficient bone, a sinus lift procedure is performed to increase the amount of bone. This is done by pushing up the membrane lining the sinus gently away from the jaw. Subsequently, autogenous (the patient’s own) bone or artificial bone substitute is tightly packed into the space obtained.
